Why Asphalt Shingles Are the Best Choice For Your Roof

Asphalt shingles are a great option for nearly anyone who’s considering a new roof. They’re relatively inexpensive, last more than a decade when properly installed, and come in a wide variety of colors and styles. They’re both functional and affordable. Let’s take a closer look at asphalt shingles, and why they’re the best roofing choice for your home.

Asphalt Shingle Types

There are two types of asphalt shingles. Organic shingles are made with recycled paper that’s been paired with asphalt, ceramic granules, and a type of salt to create a durable, waterproof result. The other is made with fiberglass; based on a reinforcing mat of fiberglass, they’re then covered with asphalt to make them waterproof. The main difference between them is that organic asphalt shingles are more durable, but fiberglass asphalt shingles offer better protection against fire. The organic version used to be more prevalent, but fiberglass is now more common.

The Affordability Factor

One of the top advantages of asphalt shingles is that they are less expensive than other types of roofing materials. They’re also much easier to install than some other types of roofing, making installation quick and painless. Considering the lower cost, easy (less costly) installation, and a lifespan of up to 15 years, it’s no mystery why so many homeowners choose this type of shingle for their new roof.

Considering Style

This type of shingle boasts a lower cost, but they aren’t at all lacking in style. There are three types from which to choose, including the traditional 3-tab, laminated architectural, and premium. No matter the style of your home, there’s an asphalt shingle that will look great with it. 3-tab shingles are very common, with architectural options a close second. Architectural shingles give your roof a dimensional look, as you would expect from slate or wood shingles. The premium version boasts a variety of patterns from which to choose, giving you the power to completely customize your home’s roof.
