Insulation & Your Home

Notoriously bitter winters make insulation a very important concern for homeowners in the Chicago area. Every home, no matter the size, is affected by warmth’s natural tendency to move into cooler areas, both inside and outside the home.

Properly insulating your home provides an effective barrier to this transfer of heat during the winter, as well as when you’re trying to keep the heat out of your air conditioned home during the summer months. As a homeowner, it’s going to be up to you to choose the best option for protecting your home from harsh seasonal temperatures.

Roll/Batt Blanket

This type of insulation is very widely available and can be purchased in individual batts or long rolls that can be trimmed to fit nearly any space. The fibers are typically made of fiberglass or some other flexible fiber material, such as plastic, cotton, or mineral wool. Various widths are available for a range of applications, from attic trusses to floor joists. While it’s a very popular choice for homeowners, due to ease of DIY installation, it doesn’t provide quite the same coverage as some other types, and may not create an effective barrier to air flow.

Rigid Foam Board

Rigid foam boards are a popular choice among homeowners because they provide a good amount of thermal resistance. These boards can be a good choice for new construction and crawl space applications.  However, they can be difficult and costly to install in existing structures.

Blown-In/Loose-Fill

This type of insulation is one of the most effective types available on the market. It consists of loose pieces of foam or fiber, and is an excellent option for insulating attics because it has the ability to conform to existing spaces.  Properly installed, it does not harm the structure or any existing finish.

The insulation is “blown in” using specialized equipment that allows air pockets to form between the individual pieces, enabling it to retains its insulating properties from year to year. At Adams Roofing, we proudly recommend and install AttiCat Loosefill for keeping your home properly insulated in the Chicago area.
