The type of insulation for your attic is something you should consider before tackling this important home improvement project. Two products come to mind: loose-fill and batts. Here are the differences between the two options:

• Loose-Fill Insulation – Packaged in bags, it is made of fiberglass or cellulose fibers that are blown into the attic using a long, flexible tube that runs from the blowing machine to an application nozzle. This type of insulation is best used for attics with irregular or nonstandard joist spacing.
• Batts – Also known as blanket insulation, it is a form of bulk insulation designed to fit between the attic walls, joists, and studs. Generally made of fiberglass, it is often packaged in rolls of various thicknesses and widths. It is perfect for attics with standard joist spacing.

The R-Value of the Attic Insulation

It refers to the insulation’s capacity to resist heat flow, and it varies depending on the region. According to ENERGY STAR®, our local area falls under Zone 5, which means the insulation’s R-value must be R49 to R60 for uninsulated attics and R38 to R49 for attics existing three to four inches of insulation.
