Common Weather-Related Damage to Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is an excellent choice for protecting your home against harsh weather conditions in the Palantine area. However, you should be aware that there are some circumstances where it may become damaged. Hail, strong winds, and flying debris can cause serious damage to your siding and siding replacement may be needed to keep your home fully protected from the elements.

What to Look for After a Storm

Vinyl siding is generally more resistant to damage than other types of siding, such as aluminum or wood. For example, depending upon its age and condition, vinyl is usually flexible enough to bounce back after being struck by hail or debris. Aluminum or wood siding may become permanently dented under the same conditions.

In the event of a storm, there are three common types of damage to look for with vinyl siding:

  • Cracks: These may be found running parallel to your siding and are often found toward the middle of the ridges and the valley of the panel. A crack may often appear in the shape of a half-circle.
  • Chips: In areas of limited flexibility, small pieces of siding may break off if there is a direct hit. This often occurs toward the bottom of a siding panel and is also usually in the shape of a half-circle.
  • Holes: Large hailstones or wind-driven debris could cause holes in your siding. In this instance, water can then bypass the siding and cause additional damage to your home.

It is important to have your home inspected by a reputable siding contractor as soon as damage is found. Your insurance company may cover any needed siding replacement, but not secondary damage that is caused from putting off repair work. Also, calling a contractor before you make your insurance claim is a good idea. They can give you an estimate of the damage first, so you can compare to the amounts from your insurance company.
