Gutters are vital to the health of your home. Gutters protect roofs from mold and protect foundations from sinking and cracking. Properly maintaining your gutters, or replacing faulty ones, can save you tens of thousands of dollars in home repairs.
Well-functioning gutters move water from the house in a steady flow through the downspouts. Water shouldn’t be overflowing the gutters, nor should it be leaking at the corners or from any drain pipes.
Dirty and clogged gutters are easy to spot without having to get on your roof. During or after a decent rain, look for how well water flows from the spout. Clogged gutters produce slow, sluggish runoff. If you can see your gutters from a 2nd story window, check for pooling water, also a sign of clogging.
If you see water leaking from the gutters or overshooting the gutters, then you should consider replacing them. Gutters start to leak when seasonal temperature fluctuations cause seals to shrink and expand, eventually cracking them. Water overshooting a gutter is a symptom that gutters are no longer properly aligned with the roof which can be the result of seasonal wear and tear or improper installation. Besides leaks and poor drainage, you should also look for punctures, rust, and obvious signs of gutter misalignment.
Each house and climate are different, but you want to get gutters which can move the most water away from the house. Remember, gutters serve an important role in protecting the home and its value. The bigger the gutter, the more water (and storm debris) it can move from the house. The largest residential gutters are 3” x 4” aluminum gutters, which many commend for delivering the most value.
