Signs of Hail and Wind Roof Damage

roofing contractor is the best person to determine whether your roof has sustained any damage from wind or hail. However, it’s not a bad idea to learn more about your roof so you have a higher likelihood of spotting the signs of weathering.

Here are some tips on how to check your roof for wind and hail damage:

Blown-Off Shingles

Missing or damaged shingles are the most obvious signs of wind damage. Shingles don’t get blown off easily, but if your area is known for frequent high winds, or if a hailstorm recently hit, shingles can get ripped off your roof. Localized damage of up to 30% of your roof can be addressed with professional roof repair. However, if the damage affects more than that, it might be necessary to replace it.

Knocked-Off Shingle Granules

Asphalt shingles have granules that protect them from the sun’s UV rays. Some shingles also have special granules that leach copper to prevent the growth of unsightly algae. Without their granules, shingles are exposed and they won’t survive long.

If you find granules in your gutters, check the shingles for spots where bunches of granules have been dislodged. This is a sign of hail damage. It’s time to think about replacing your roof shingles if most of them are affected.

Indoor Signs of Damage

On a sunny day, if you enter your attic, you might spot tiny shafts of light coming through the roof. These are holes and your roof is already leaking. However, roofs can also leak without showing such signs, so check for moisture, stains, and peeling paint. You might also spot some clumping in the insulation. If you find rotting wood or mold and mildew, the damage has been there long. It might be time to replace your roof.

Call a Pro

You might be able to check for the more obvious signs of roof damage, but repairing it yourself is out of the question. It’s risky for you and for your home. The best thing to do is to call a professional roofer to inspect your roof and determine what needs to be done.
