Asphalt shingles have granules that protect them from the sun’s UV rays. Some shingles also have special granules that leach copper to prevent the growth of unsightly algae. Without their granules, shingles are exposed and they won’t survive long.

However, roofs can also leak without showing such signs, so check for moisture, stains, and peeling paint. You might also spot some clumping in the insulation.
